How We Began
About Global Community Day
In 2008, the SJU National Alumni Board began a
new tradition rooted in the Jesuit tradition of service to others. The
goal was to identify one day each year when SJU alumni could come
together and serve their local communities no matter where they were in
life…or in the world. That first year, we were up and running in five
cities: Boston, New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago and
Philadelphia. Since then, National Community Day has grown exponentially
and has now gone global!
Along with SJU Alumni, Parents, and Friends, Global Community Day is a collaborative effort with current students. Students identify, organize, and volunteer at service opportunities in the Philadelphia area, often partnering at sites with fellow Hawks.
How Volunteers Participate
Whether you serve as a site leader, sign up for an established service location,
or participate individually on your own in your area, you are part of a larger
community of Hawks who put the Jesuit mission into action on the same
day, in working as men and women for others. Watch a video about the 2013 Global Community Day experience.
Alumni, Parents, friends, and the SJU community can all participate in this event. If you would like to help grow Global Community Day, create a service opportunity in your neighborhood, or help support a local non-profit organization, becoming a site leader is a great way to go about it. Check out our Site Leader Resource Center for more information.
To register your site to be added to the list of available sites, Fill Out Your Site Information Here. If you would like more information or are interested in participating but would like additional information, contact firstname.lastname@example.org with questions.
You don't need to be a site leader to participate. Simply register for one of the existing sites available near you. Your site leader will be in touch as it gets closer to the event with more specific information.
Current Student Participation
Global Community Day is a partnership with our current students as well. Undergraduate student leaders partner with local non-profit organizations to also create volunteer sites. Current students can sign up to participate in the morning of service and our student leaders help organize the groups and transport the students to each location.
