Two Homes 2,721 Miles Apart

2,721. That’s how many miles away my son Riley will be when he goes off to college at Saint Joseph’s this fall. It’s a number that has rolled around in my brain a lot over the last few months, especially when someone asks the inevitable questions: “Why Saint Joseph’s? Why so far?” I usually respond with something like, “It just felt right when we visited. They have his major. His admissions counselor, Sue Chen, was amazing.” All of these things are absolutely true, yet somehow they don’t seem to satisfy the question. We are a California family. A beach family. Riley loves to surf and has loved the ocean ever since I first dangled his tiny baby toes in the surf. We love where we live and feel blessed to live there (especially in February when the rest of the country is shoveling snow). So why was my son going to the other side of the country for college? Why SJU? Click through to the entire blog post by Stephanie Callahan P’18> | Welcome Riley and his family to the SJU community>

Political Science Class Explores Cuban-U.S. Relations
Cuba is often associated with its 1950s-era cars, all in bright colors and kept in mint condition. Ancient Buicks and Chevrolets, relics of the island’s former relationship with the United States, line the streets of Havana. But for 12 Saint Joseph’s students, recently returned from a study tour to Cuba, the island offered much more than a colorful show of the past. “Contemporary Cuban Politics and Culture,” a class and study tour organized by the political science department, introduces students to over 500 years of Cuban history and provides a profound understanding of the country. During the spring semester, students studied Cuba’s relationship with the United States and its current political situation, then experienced life on the island during the class’ two-week travel period. Still relatively rare given the United States’ embargo against Cuba, travel opportunities like the SJU study tour are organized to increase understanding between Cuban and American citizens. Four for Ghana: SJU Women Spend the Summer Serving
Class of 2014 graduates Sofia Peirats and Melissa Quinn found a non-traditional way to celebrate their graduation from Saint Joseph’s. Rather than spend time at the beach or travel across Europe, the two went to Ghana for three weeks, accompanied by Erin David ’16, as Community Water Solutions (CWS) Fellows. Nicole Quirk ’15 was also called to serve in Ghana this summer, choosing to work with City of Refuge Ministries (CORM), a grass-roots religious organization that supports rescued children. More>

In an Instant:
Photography as Time Machine

Associate professor of art Dennis Weeks, M.F.A., captures multiple moments at the same place with his camera and stitches them together, creating scenes that would otherwise never have happened. He plays with this concept throughout his series of large-scale, “long exposure” digital prints, as he refers to the work. In them, he combines hundreds of photographs into single compositions, effectively capturing the experiences of subjects who may not have crossed paths in real life. “Photography is its own kind of time machine, because photos stop time,” Weeks said. “Showing how things change over time became a fascination of mine over the years.” The image above is called “Logan Fountain” from 2010. Gift Planning 101: What Is an Endowment?
An endowment is a forever gift – a fund you establish in which the principal is invested and the earnings are used to help the programs and goals you want to support. Because the principal isn’t typically spent, endowments are essentially intended to last forever. When you establish an endowment you ensure that Saint Joseph’s University students benefit from Catholic education in the Jesuit tradition now and for years to come. For additional information, click or contact director of gift planning: Anat Becker, J.D.
