Mike Daniels ’00 to Receive
SJU Alumni Association’s Service Awards


The Saint Joseph’s University Alumni Association will honor two of its most loyal members, Patricia McElwee Mahoney ’76 and Mike Daniels ’00 with its service awards, the Reverend Joseph S. Hogan, S.J. Award and Ignatius Award, respectively. Mahoney and Daniels will be honored jointly at an on-campus reception on October 25. Register>

A longtime supporter of Saint Joseph’s University, Mahoney will be honored for exemplifying “Christian principles and outstanding loyal service to Saint Joseph’s University.” She has been an active alumna at Saint Joseph’s University since graduating with a degree in food marketing. As a founding member of the SJU National Alumni Board, she was integral in developing its vision and structure. Other leadership positions she’s held within the University alumni community include alumni association president, chair of its council of presidents and member of the SJU Board of Trustees Development Committee. Daniels will receive the Ignatius Award in recognition of his devoted efforts to serve and promote Saint Joseph’s University. This award is bestowed upon a graduate from within the past 20 years who lives a life of “service to others” consistent with the principles of Saint Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order. Daniels serves on the University’s National Alumni Board (NAB) as the western states representative. He also sits on the NAB’s Networks Committee, which supports and advises the SJU Alumni Relations staff on projects related to regional clubs and affinity groups. More>

Finnesey Field Expanded, to be Rededicated as Sweeney Field

Longtime Saint Joseph’s University landmark Finnesey Field will be renamed Sweeney Field this fall upon completion of an extensive expansion project. The venue, which has served as the home of Hawk Athletic teams for more than 80 years, will recognize the contributions of Sean S. Sweeney MBA ’94, a member of the University’s Board of Trustees, and the lead benefactor to the renovation project. The field will be blessed during Hawktoberfest. More>

Saint Joseph’s University is one of the top colleges in the Northeast, according to The Princeton Review. SJU ranked as one of the 226 institutions the company recommends in the “Best Regional Colleges”  section of its website (registration required). More>

Grad Joins Peace Corps to Serve in Madagascar
Watchung, N.J., native Astara Maiure ’13 (left) has been accepted into the Peace Corps and assigned to a two-year placement in Madagascar. While stationed in the island country off the southeast coast of Africa, she will serve as a rural agriculture advisor, promoting sustainable practices and enhancing the community’s ability to generate sustainable harvests. “Volunteering through the Peace Corps is just something I’ve always wanted to do,” said Maiure. “I want to spend as much time as possible learning and experiencing a different lifestyle. I’m excited to immerse myself in a new environment and learn the culture.” Maiure said her time at Saint Joseph’s has prepared her for international service. Calling All ’64 Hawks
The Class of 1964 is on deck this May to enter the Golden Hawks, an exclusive group for SJU grads who graduated half a century prior. The Class of 1964 will be inducted during its 50th reunion celebration on Commencement weekend, May 16-17, 2014. To begin the planning for this milestone occasion, the Office of Development and Alumni Relations invites class members to join the 50th reunion committee. Serving as a reunion volunteer is an excellent way to rekindle friendships and play a key role in planning a successful event. If you are interested in attending the kickoff meeting or have any questions about the committee, contact Lynn Langnas at 610-660-3467 by September 13.

Inaugural Parent-Student Blessings for Freshmen Families Welcomes Families to SJU Community
Nearly 1,300 freshmen and their families were welcomed into the Catholic, Jesuit community at Saint Joseph’s University with a blessings that marked the beginning of their relationship with SJU. Convened on campus at the Chapel of St. Joseph Michael J. Smith, S.J., Memorial and presided over by University President
C. Kevin Gillespie, S.J. ’72
, the second of three services was held August 23.

“Welcome and thank you for bringing your precious son or daughter here to our campus, here to our family,” Gillespie said. “We’re going to ritualize that in a special way. It’s really about love – the love of a parent for a child. This is the dream that so many parents have had for so long being realized. We, the family of Saint Joseph’s University, are honored that you are bringing your sons and daughters to us. And to you sons and daughters, welcome to Hawk Hill. You’re about to enter into an exciting adventure of education, formation and celebration.” Parents and children alike then had the opportunity to hear reassuring remarks from two individuals who know a thing or two about the freshman drop-off. “Hawks on Call” Team Returns to Action September 15
SJU’s “Hawks on Call” is back in action this month. Each semester,
a dedicated and energetic group of students join the Hawks on Call team, a group that aims to update and engage alumni, parents and friends. These students love to listen to your stories, help answer questions about campus and are so excited to talk to you!


Become a Hawk Ambassador

Do you want to help the Office of Undergraduate Admissions recruit the next generation of Hawks? Hawk Ambassadors is an active group of alumni and parent volunteers which assist in creating and maintaining connections to Saint Joseph’s University by relating personally to prospective students and parents by sharing their stories. Hawk Ambassadors can directly impact a student’s college choice by helping families see the value and opportunities provided by the Jesuit education at Saint Joseph’s University. The level of commitment to be a Hawk Ambassador can be tailored to any availability. Volunteers have aided recruiting efforts in a variety of ways, including:
  • Serving as Saint Joseph’s representatives at local high school college fairs
  • Participating in calling campaigns to congratulate admitted students on their acceptance to the University
  • Writing alumni-to-student or parent-to-parent letters to families about why Saint Joseph’s would be a good fit for their future
