Bob Healey Sr. ’51 to Receive
Shield of Loyola at 33rd Annual Alumni Gala

Bob Healey Sr. ’51 will receive the Shield of Loyola at the 33rd annual Alumni Gala on November 9 at the Hyatt at the Bellevue in Center City Philadelphia. The SJU Alumni Association’s most prestigious honor, the Shield of Loyola is awarded to a distinguished alumnus or alumna who has had remarkable success in his or her profession, whose life reflects the values of St. Ignatius Loyola, and who has demonstrated unparalleled loyalty to the University. Putting into practice the Ignatian ideals he learned at Saint Joseph’s, Healey is a remarkable leader who has made it his life’s work to help communities preserve and enhance Catholic education.

A graduate of Camden Catholic High School, Healey established the International Education Foundation (IEF) in 1998 to help children from disadvantaged families attend Catholic schools and public and private universities. The Catholic School Development Program (CSDP) is an extension of the IEF which was inaugurated because of Healey’s concern about the sustainability of Catholic elementary schools in America.

In 2001, Healey founded the Healey International Relief Foundation (HIRF), a non-profit organization focused on helping orphaned children in the west African Third World Country of Sierra Leone. HIRF provides medical assistance, stocks food banks, and provides health care education, basic essentials and clean water.

A practicing attorney for 25 years, Healey co-founded the Viking Yacht Company in 1964 with his older brother, Bill Healey ’51. While Bill Healey focused on design, engineering and production, Bob Healey focused on the financial and business side of the company. This division of labor has resulted in a company that has operated at a high level for 50 years and spawned Viking Associates, a real estate management and development company, Viking International Resources, which is involved in oil and gas exploration and production, and Healey Investment Partnership, which focuses on financial investment and money management.

Research Says Insurance Industry Lacks Gender Diversity
According to market research from Saint Joseph’s University, gender diversity is lacking across all leadership levels within the insurance industry. Primary author Mike Angelina, executive director of Saint Joseph’s Academy of Risk Management and Insurance, is hopeful his findings will call on businesses to address gender inequality, saying employing females in leadership roles will lead to a more diverse workforce and potentially better represent the underlying customer demographics. Alumna Reports on Civil Unrest from Istanbul
Writing under the screen name “abigaleist,” Chicago native Abigale James (pictured), an English major from the SJU Class of 2010, has been filing CNN iReports from Istanbul recounting the city’s civil unrest during the past few weeks. Moved by the injustices she witnessed, James started filing the reports to give those not knowledgeable of the situation a better understanding of what's happening. Living abroad for more than three years in China, Thailand, Colombia and Turkey, James happened to be in Istanbul writing a book examining Turkey’s past, present and future when the violence erupted.

“I’ve been in solidarity with these protestors for past 17 days,” she wrote in an email dated June 14, 2013. “I’ve seen brutality. I’ve seen injustice. I’ve seen pain. The recent events in this country have caused me much grief. Injustices are occurring outside my door. I was Jesuit educated for eight years, and I have to admit a lot of the ideals rubbed off on me. There is no doubt this is a time for justice. This isn’t a Turkish issue. It’s a humanist concern.”

SJU’s Project Haiti Provides Hope for Earthquake-ravaged Country’s Future

Now more than three years removed from the devastating earthquake of 2010 that killed 314,000 and left even more homeless, Haiti has fallen off the headlines and out of news broadcasts. But for a growing contingent at Saint Joseph’s University, Haiti is a personal and professional constant. Born out of a desire to help the nation respond to the tragedy, SJU Project Haiti had grander goals: rebuild and sustain. Saint Joseph’s looked to its strengths and decided to join forces with a Jesuit educational initiative in the country, Foi et Joie (faith and joy), to develop a viable educational model based on sound pedagogy.
