SJU Celebrates First Birthday for Post Learning Commons


One of the most popular hubs on campus, the John and Maryanne Hennings Post Learning Commons (PLC), recently celebrated its first birthday. Students, faculty and staff gathered in the PLC’s atrium to mark the occasion with a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” and a cake decorated to resemble the exterior of the building. Attendees also wrote thank you notes to the Posts.

University Releases Commencement Information, Announces Speakers
Saint Joseph’s University will grant honorary degrees to Elisabeth A. Hagen, M.D. ’91 (right), under secretary for food safety for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and John W. O’Malley, S.J. (left), university professor in the Department of Theology at Georgetown University, at this year’s May 11 commencement ceremonies. The graduate, doctoral and College of Professional and Liberal Studies ceremony begins at 9 a.m., the undergraduate at 3 p.m. Both ceremonies will be held on the James J. Maguire ’58 Campus. Madges Steps Down as Dean of College of Arts and Sciences
After seven years, William Madges, Ph.D. will resign as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, effective May 31. After a sabbatical in 2013-14, he will return to the faculty as a professor of theology and religious studies. During Madges’ tenure, the College of Arts and Sciences implemented a new general education program, hired 57 faculty members, and initiated 10 undergraduate majors, 12 minors and many online programs. Jeanne F. Brady, Ph.D., an accomplished educator who has spent years researching curricula, leadership in education, and issues involving social justice, will serve as the interim dean, beginning June 1, and continuing until a full-time appointment results from the national search.

SJU Air Force ROTC Detachment 750 Inducts First Four Members into Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame

United States Air Force Lt. Col. James Turnbull, commander of the Saint Joseph’s University Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) Detachment 750, believes there are lessons to be learned and examples to follow from those who served before him and the cadets under his command. To accomplish this mission, Turnbull has established a detachment alumni wall of fame to pay tribute to cadets who passed through the SJU ROTC program, which began in 1951. Charles McKee, Esq. ’65 to Be Honored with Gem Award from Law Alumni Chapter

A partner in the Havertown, Pa., law firm Donohue, McKee & Mattson, Ltd., Charles McKee ’65 will be honored with the Gem Award from the Law Alumni Chapter for for displaying great loyalty to the University while focusing his career on helping others. A vice chair of the board of trustees at Philadelphia’s Mercy Vocational High School, McKee joins the Honorable Paul Innes ’77 (2012), Patrick Shea, Esq. ’79 (2011) and Martin Corr, Esq. ’58 (2010) as the most recent recipients of the award, which has been granted since 1983. During the event, the chapter awarded its Law Alumni Scholarship to SJU student body president George Tsoflias ’13, who is planning to attend Villanova Law in the fall. Megan Donovan ’13 received the chapter’s Kenneth Mines Award, an endowed scholarship founded in 1997, and will attend the University of Richmond Law School in the fall.

McFarland Scholarship Gives Student
“Chance of a Lifetime”
The Saint Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia has awarded Emily Miller ’15, an English and communications double major, the Cmdr. George C. McFarland Scholarship, granting her $20,000 to study at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. This award marks the fourth consecutive year an SJU student has received a scholarship from the Saint Andrew’s Society. More >

SJU Seniors Josephine Bahn, Amber Layton and Christian O’Brien have benefited from the hands-on education and service-oriented experience Saint Joseph’s University offers. They want to ensure these opportunities are available for future Hawks. To that end, they—and the Class of 2013—has challenged SJU alumni, parents and friends to raise 1,122 gifts—one for every graduate—before Commencement on May 11.
