Saint Joseph’s Celebrates All Women at SheUnited Conference 2013


Women today face a unique set of challenges that include balancing a career, running a home, raising children, and caring for aging parents. Competing priorities pull them in every imaginable direction.

There is strength in numbers, however, and the SheUnited Conference 2013 will bring together women of all ages and backgrounds to share their collective wisdom and experiences.

The celebration of women from the Saint Joseph’s University community and beyond will be held Saturday, March 23 at the Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena. The daylong conference kicks off with a dual keynote address from accomplished business, government and civic leader Rosemarie Greco ’75, and Mary Lou Quinlan ’75, author, entrepreneur and television personality (above, left to right).

Following the keynote, attendees can learn from internationally recognized experts, educators and accomplished female authors on five conference tracks: “Live Healthier,” “Network it, Girl,” “Renew Your Spirit,” “Embrace Milestones” and “Simplify Your Life.”

In addition to the 11 speaker presentations held during two afternoon sessions, the conference will host a health and wellness corner with presentations and information booths, a career corner with a mentor meet up and resume review, student presentations, and an author corner, where attendees can have books signed by the conference’s published speakers.

Proceeds raised through the conference support the University’s partnership with the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, which provides scholarships to women 25 years and older who are completing their undergraduate degrees.

Joseph J. McLaughlin ’81 to Receive Haub School Hall of Fame Award
A widely respected leader with more than 25 years of financial services experience, Joseph J. McLaughlin, Jr. ’81 will receive the 2013 Haub School of Business Hall of Fame Award on April 17 at the Center City Philadelphia Loews Hotel. McLaughlin serves as chairman and chief executive officer of The Haverford Trust Company, a wealth advisory and investment management services firm. A member of the Saint Joseph’s University Board of Trustees, McLaughlin sits on its Finance, Marketing and Communications, Investment, and Banking committees. Previously the chairman of the Erivan K. Haub School of Business Board of Visitors, McLaughlin maintains an active role in supporting the Haub School’s students through job and internship placements and guest speaking engagements. More >

Papal Profiling: Who will Be the Next Pontiff?

Dean Madges Opines
Speculation regarding the profile of the next leader of the Catholic Church is mounting in the days since Pope Benedict XVI’s surprising resignation. William Madges, Ph.D., dean of the University’s College of Arts and Sciences and professor of theology, warns that speculation is just that until the conclave actually meets, but notes some obvious considerations. “It would be improbable, but not impossible, that the next pope would reflect a considerable shift in ideology,” said Madges. Golden Hawks Set to Return to Campus
The Hawks to the right are probably staring in awe at the packed schedule of events at this year’s Golden Hawks celebration of the Class of 1963, May 911. As is customary, the Golden Hawks will walk in the Commencement procession, but that is just the crescendo to a packed weekend of exciting, engaging events. Highlights include a golf outing, academic discussion with faculty, memorial mass, campus tour, and memory lane celebration. Save the Date: Hawktoberfest | October 11 – 13
This past year’s second annual Hawktoberfest was an over-the-top success with more than 1,800 alumni, friends and family of all ages convening on campus. This year’s third annual Hawktoberfest promises to be bigger and better. Come for the open hoops practices, athletics alumni games and informative and timely lectures, but stay for the Philly-style tailgate, kids corner and camaraderie with your fellow Hawks. How Scholarships Change Lives
Native Kenyan Michael Mungai Nyambura ’10, MS ’13 rose from the hard scrabble “street boy” culture of Nairobi Province to earn three degrees from Saint Joseph’s University. The 28-year-old social entrepreneur has been given opportunities and intends to take them for all they’re worth. Not for himself, though. He views his education as a means to help his homeland. The latest opportunity he’s been afforded is traveling to Barcelona on the University-sponsored International Marketing tour over spring break. In Spain, he will gain real world perspective on international business before returning to his homeland to assist entrepreneurs in making their businesses scalable. Mungai only has this chance because of the Sharon Haluska Memorial Scholarship which provides financial support for qualified marketing students to participate in the tour. The scholarship’s namesake was tragically killed by a drunk driver just months after her 1992 graduation. Her parents created the scholarship to help students take the marketing trip because it was one of her fondest college memories. Saint Joseph’s has more than 250 named scholarships such as the Sharon Haluska Memorial Scholarship which alumni, parents and friends have established. These scholarships help SJU students strive for the magis and makes the University a better place. To show its appreciation, the University is hosting this spring’s 22nd annual President’s Scholarship Celebration for scholarship benefactors and recipients. Benefactors will have the opportunity to meet with their scholarship recipients and see their gifts in action.

Students Gain Perspective on Nicaraguan Health Care
Fourteen Saint Joseph’s University students spent seven days in January on an immersion tour of Nicaragua that showed them the stark reality of that country’s healthcare system. The cohort visited healthcare centers, met with the members of the Jesuit Volunteer Community and spoke with locals about life in rural Nicaragua. More >

W.W. Smith Foundation Continues Turning Dreams into Reality for SJU Students
The relationship between the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust and Saint Joseph’s University spans more than three decades, during which time students have received more than $2.3M in scholarship funding. This year alone, 30 Saint Joseph's University students – from a wide swath of majors, class years, and ethnicities – received $90,000 to assist in furthering their Catholic, Jesuit education on Hawk Hill. “The success of the Smith Scholars over the years is a testimony to the impact and strength of the relationship between W.W. Smith and Saint Joseph’s University,” University President C. Kevin Gillespie, S.J. ’72 said at a fall reception for the Smith Scholars. “Their success is also a wonderful example of the value of a Saint Joseph’s education and the transformational impact it has on our students.” More >

Saint Joseph’s University is pleased to unveil its donor recognition display located in the Falese Atrium of Merion Hall on the James J. Maguire ’58 Campus. This display recognizes the support of the many alumni, parents and friends who contributed at the highest levels to our recent campaign, With Faith and Strength to Dare: The Campaign for Saint Joseph’s University. Members of the Saint Joseph’s University community are invited to share in a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and walk in the “footsteps of Jesus” January 2-13, 2014. The tour includes more than 30 attractions in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Gethsemane, Nazareth and Galilee. New York Council Spring Dinner
This year’s event features James Martin, S.J., Jesuit priest, culture editor of America magazine and New York Times bestselling author of numerous books, including his latest, Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor and Laughter are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life. In 2012, Father Martin received an honorary doctorate from Saint Joseph’s University. Proceeds from the dinner benefit the Summer Scholars program, in which students engage in creative scholarly work and independent research projects with faculty mentors from 26 different academic departments and programs.
