Month of Service

The goal of the May Month of Service is to identify one month each year when SJU alumni, parents, friends and students can come together to serve with and for their local communities no matter where you are in life… or in the world. Unite with Hawks in one of the most important aspects of the Ignatian pedagogy, service.

To participate in the May Month of Service, follow these three steps.

1) Identify a site in your region below.

2) Contact the site leader to register for the site.

3) On the day of your service activity, post a picture to social media with #HawksGiveBack. This will allow us to showcase the force for good our alumni are in the world. If you want us to post the picture on our accounts, send the photo to Connor Dehel at cdehel@sju.edu.

Sites by Region

California

Los Angeles Regional Food Bank

6055 E. Randolf St., Commerce, CA 90040

We will be one of several volunteer groups working at a warehouse to help sort, inspect, and repackage donated food items from local food drives for distribution to needy families.

You MUST register with the LARFB for this event here. Search for "Alumni" to find our group faster. Use password "stjoe13" to register. Please read and follow ALL of the instructions and information presented. You will receive an e-mail response bearing a bar code. Print it out and bring it with you the day of the event.

You are highly encouraged to bring friends and relatives, but no one under the age of 14 years old is allowed as per LARFB rules. Dress casually and be prepared to get a little dusty/dirty as we will be working in a warehouse. Long sleeves and gloves are recommended as we will be handling boxes, bags, and other containers of food as well as totes, pallets, or plastic wrap. Wear running shoes or other padded sole shoes as we will be working on a concrete floor. Shoes must be closed toe with a covered heel. Protect your feet! We will be participating with several other groups so wear your SJU gear and let's see if we can outnumber them!

Lastly, in prior years some of us have spontaneously gone to lunch afterward, so be prepared. :)
